The famous Indian leader left strong messages to humanity during his lifetime.
Mahatma Gandhi was the political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement and the creator of a kind of civil disobedience that would later become very common around the world.
A man of indomitable spirit, he was remembered as a man who changed the world and left behind strong wisdom.
“Be the change you want to see in the world. Our majesty is not so much in fixing the world as it is in our ability to change ourselves”.
If you change yourself, you will change the world. If you change the way you think, what you feel will change, and your actions will change. And so the world changes around you. Not just because you look at your surroundings with different eyes and emotions, but because a change from within allows you to take action in ways you haven’t thought about before because you’re stuck in your own thought patterns.
The problem with changing our outside world, rather than changing ourselves, is that you will still be the same when you achieve that change you are striving for. You will still have flaws, anger, negativity, and restraint… you will be intact.
And so in that new situation, you will still not find what you hoped for, because your mind is still working with negative things. And if you don’t have insight and don’t distance yourself from your ego, it can be even stronger. Since your ego likes to share things, look for enemies, and separate, it can start creating even more problems and conflicts in your life and the world.
You have control!
“No one can hurt me without my permission”.
How you feel and how you react is something that is always up to you. There may be a “normal” or common way to react to different things. But that’s basically all you can do.
You choose your thoughts, reactions, and emotions on almost everything. You don’t have to detach, overreact, or react in a negative way. At least, not every time or right away. Sometimes the reflex reaction just disappears.
And when you realize that no one else can control how you feel, you can adopt this thinking in everyday life and develop it as a habit.
A habit with which you can grow and develop over time. By doing this, your life will be much easier and more comfortable.
Forgive and let go!
“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the quality of the strong”.
“An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind”.
Fighting evil against evil does not help anyone. You always choose how you react to something. When you adopt such a thought as a habit, then you react in a way that is much more useful to you and others.
You will realize that forgiving and letting go of the past do you and the people in your world a great service. Spending your time on negative memories will not help you when you learn the lessons you can learn from that experience. It will probably only produce more suffering and you will block yourself in action in the present moment.
If you do not forgive, then you allow your past and other people to control your feelings. By forgiving them, you free yourself from those shackles. And then you can focus, completely, on other things.
If you don’t act, you’re not going anywhere!
“One gram of exercise is worth more than a ton of preaching”.
Without action, very little can be achieved. However, taking action can be very difficult. There is a lot of internal resistance.
And then you can reach out to preach. Or endlessly reading and studying. Feeling like you’re moving forward. But has little or no practical results in real life.
Therefore, to get where you want to go and truly understand yourself and your world, you have to practice. Books can only give you knowledge. You need to take action and translate that knowledge into results and understanding.
Take care of this moment
“I do not want to predict the future. I am worried about the present. God did not give me control over the future moment”.
The best way to overcome the inner resistance that often prevents us is to accept the present and live in it.
Why? Well, when you’re in the present moment, you don’t worry about the next moment that you can’t control. Resistance to your actions, by creating thoughts about the negative consequences in the future or past failures of your actions, loses power and weakens. And so it becomes easier to act and focus on this moment at the same time in order to be better.
We are all human
“I claim to be an ordinary individual prone to mistakes, like any other mortal. I have enough humility to admit my mistakes and reconsider my steps”.
“It is not wise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to remind ourselves that the strongest can weaken and that the wisest can make mistakes”.
When you make idols out of people – even the thought of them having great results – you run the risk of being distanced and unconnected to them. You start to feel like you will never achieve anything like them because they are so different. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that they are also ordinary people, regardless of who they are and what they do.
I think it’s important to remember to avoid falling into the rather useless habit of punishing yourself for the mistakes you’ve made. Instead, be able to look clearly at where you went wrong and what you can learn from your mistakes. And then, try again.
“First they will ignore you, then they will laugh at you, then they will fight against you and then you will win”.
Be persistent. In time, the surrounding opponents will disappear and give up. Both your inner resistance and your own restraint that always kept you in the past will weaken.
Find what you really love to do. Then you will find the internal motivation to continue, to go and move on.
Success or victory will rarely come as quickly as we would like. I think one of the reasons people don’t get what they want is simply because they give up too soon. The time they think it takes to succeed is not the same amount of time it usually takes to achieve that goal. This false belief comes in part from the world in which we live. A world is full of magic pills as a solution where commercials constantly promise us extraordinary success. Be smiling, it will illuminate your life in the most difficult moments.
See the good in people and help them!
“I only see good qualities in people. Since I am not sinless, I will not assume or investigate other people’s mistakes”.
“A man becomes great to the extent that he works for the benefit of his people. Leadership used to mean fighting with muscles, but today it means getting along with people”.
There is almost always something good in people. As well as things that may not be good. But we can choose which things to focus on. And if you want better, then focus on the good in people, it is a useful choice. Also, life is easier for you, because your world is becoming a much more pleasant and positive place.
When you see good in people, it is easier to motivate yourself and help others. By helping others, you give them value and not only make their lives better. Already to myself. In time, you get what you give. And the people you help will be more inclined to help other people. And so together you create positive changes that grow and become stronger.
Be your own!
“Happiness is when you think, say, and work in harmony. Always aim for complete harmony of thoughts, words, and deeds. Always clear your mind, and everything will be fine”.
When your words and thoughts align, then it is shown through your communication. The tonality of your voice and body language – which make up 90% of communication – are aligned with your words.
When everything is in harmony, then people really start listening to what you tell them. If your actions are not in harmony with what you are saying, then you are violating your beliefs in what you are doing. Like other people’s beliefs in you too.
“Constant development is the law of life and a man who always tries to keep his dogmas in order to be consistent, puts himself in a false position”.
You can always improve your skills, change your habits or reconsider your assessments. You can come to a deeper understanding of yourself and the world. Of course, you may be inconsistent or like something you don’t know from time to time. You may have trouble reacting congruently or communicating authentically.
Trying to keep or stick to your old views to be consistent while understanding yourself – otherwise, it is very wrong. It’s not a fun place to be. Choosing to grow and develop is a happier and much more useful place to be.
